  1. Awesome Mom says:

I love that look! My kids love to nibble on my toes and I get them back by nibbling on theirs.

  2. Becky says:

Sorry totally weird question, but can Parker even taste because of the trach? I wanted to ask on his food therapy post but never got around to it. Obviously shoes dont taste good but I was just curious if that was more of a texture thing he wasnt liking? :) Told you it was weird! ha ha

  3. Shannon says:

Cute! Maybe Parker needs shoes of the edible kind. LOL. I am hoping to have something for the contest, but I can’t guarantee that my model will be willing to cooperate! Lately, she isn’t liking her picture being taken. I only post a very small portion of the pictures I actually take because of her refusal to cooperate.

  4. Becky,

    Good Question!

Trached kids don’t have a sense of smell….hence not much of a sense of taste.

During Parker’s feeding therapies he wears a special trach covering called a ‘speaking valve’ which pushes his oxygen up through his voice box, etc. allowing him to have a better sense to smell and taste. He can only wear it for very short amounts of time each week though.

I think chewing on his shoe just grossed him out. :D But it was so fun to get such a great cause and effect reaction.

I’m happy to answer any questions you have! Really!

  5. Kristin says:

Not only is he adorable but he has some talet. What a silly boy! I have always loved nibbling on kai’s toes.

  6. Gina says:

Isn’t that great?Just for that it seems like we’ve won something priceless. Keep it up Parker. God loves you.

  7. mom2my9 says:

That is so precious! It’s hard to learn life’s lessons sometimes! I’ll bet my shoe tastes like that, too!

  8. Muthering Heights says:

  10. kari says:

These photos are awesome Tammy! Thanks for the smile!

  11. Chris says:

Its really funny the things children like to do. My son still bites his fingernails and swallows them. I know its gross.

Your son is so cute and awesomely strong.

Your journey is an inspiration. May God continue to strengthen and keep our family strong.

  12. Christine says:

Great photos! I know some kids that actually like the way their shoes taste/feel….at least that’s ONE thing you don’t need to concern yourself with.

Quite clear Parker is not digging eating his shoes.

  13. Rhonda says:

I love that photo! So cute. A picture is worth a thousand words isn’t it?
    Happy WW!
    ~Have a blessed day.

  14. Danette says:

LOL I love that expression on his face!

My Little Bitty likes to lick things (sensory issues) which have included shoes, sidewalks, cars, even asphalt (yuck!). He usually just touches them with his tongue, I think he’s checking the texture more than actually trying to taste… and it usually doesn’t phase him but some of his explorations leave ME with the expression on Parker’s face! (for the record, he can drop to the ground in a millisecond so yes I do try to stop him from licking sidewalks but I’m not always fast enough!)

  15. Karen says:

That second photo is priceless. So cute!

  16. Mod Girl says:

Tammy! I had no idea that you are the managing editor over at 5 Minutes for Special Needs. I just read the happy, happy computer news at 5 Minutes for Mom. Praise God.

So cute! Be glad that he didn’t like the taste! My daughter (20 months) still loves to take off her shoes and chew on them. It drives me CRAZY, especially when I’m distracted and don’t notice and some stranger in the grocery store says, “Is she supposed to have those in her mouth?” Uh, no.

  41. I am so glad Becky asked that question! I hadnt thought of that!
