The Down syndrome is the easy part.

We took Parker to a new doctor in Provo yesterday.

The doctor asked me to tell him about Parker, so I ran down the list…..tethered spinal cord, trach, g-tube….terms not to foreign to a student studying in medical coding schools….  I listed all the regular stuff.

The doctor listened, taking a few notes here and there.

When I got to the end of the list he looked at me as he raised his eyebrows and asked, “Does he have any syndromes?”

I  sat there for more than a minute trying to figure out what answer he was looking for.

And then it came to me.

Oh, yeah.

That extra chromosome.

It’s called Down syndrome.

Would you believe me if I told you that I forget about the Down syndrome all the time?

Because I do.

When I look at my youngest son, I just see Parker.  Another fast movin’,  h*ll-raising Hodson boy.

heh.

The doctor looked at me and grinned as he shared,  “The Down syndrome is the easy part, right?”

And that, folks,  pretty much sums it up.

The Down syndrome really is the easy part.

The part that has changed my heart.

The blessing that allowed me to view the world differently.

The cause of such great gratitude around here.

Imagine me forgetting that.

I believe whatever you say, Tammy. ;)

Not like you to forget to be thankful for good stuff so that is hard to imagine. ;)

hope all is well. funny to be asked that. we have got that a few times as well from drs. i know what you mean but it is funny they have to ask.

  4. That is so funny, I do that all the time! People ask questions and the Down syndrome always gets forgotten, outshined by everything else!

It happens to me all the time too. I took Joey to a new speech therapist for a consult and when I was done with his medical list she asked if there are any other diagnoses. I just starred at her wondering if I’m forgetting anything. Then SHE asked ME if he has Ds. I said, Oh yeah that too. LOL.

  9. Parker, you have yourself one awesome Mom! Make sure you tell her that, ok? I hope to meet you guys someday…
    ps…sounds like you’ve found a good doc!

Hi Tammy, I happen to be LDS too, here in Medford Oregon though. I came to your site from a blog you posted on pinchingyourpennies.com. I know you probably, 99% chance, will not take me seriously, but there is something I think you should check out, for Parker’s health. It has helped several members of my family immensely, and I just cannot hear of someone else’s similar health challenges without sharing. You can look on http://glycostory.com and my family website, http://ifoundhealth.com, and contact me from there. I know you may think I am just trying to make a buck or something, but like I said, I just cannot in good conscience look away when I know something that is liable to help so much. -Adam Hunt

  11. I so agree! And how neat it is of that doctor to say that . . . some would be rather snobby about it, ya know.
