Take a Stand. Change the World.

The other day, my almost 20 year old, McCall, received a Facebook friendship request.

It was from a former seminary teacher from several years ago.

McCall remembered this teacher fondly and so accepted the request.

Not too long after, this teacher sent McCall an email.

It’s message?

mick 047

Thanking him for the time that McCall took him to task for using the word ‘retard.’

Seems as though this teacher, a seminary teacher no less, was free in his expression of all things dumb by his use of the R word.

And my McCall stood up and called him on it.

At the time my daughter wasn’t sure if she had really made a difference or not.  But she did notice he no longer used this offense word around her anymore.

In the teacher’s email he expressed the change of heart he had that day when a young girl had the courage to stand up in front of her peers and not only express the love she had for her little brother, but the offense felt by her spirit to have to be in a class where that word was being used so thoughtlessly.

He’s always remembered that experience.  And now he, too, works to end it’s use.

You never know when you will plant a seed.

Or make a difference.

Or change the world by having the courage to stand up for what is right.

Absolutely lovely. She did what I wish so many more people would do. It really *does* make a difference. If we don’t start somewhere, how will we make the changes that need so desperately to happen? Your daughter sounds like an amazing young woman, to have made such an impression.

what a sweet story. noble of your daughter, and gracious of her teacher to acknowledge it, even years later. thanks for sharing.

How awesome that your daughter stood up to the teacher and made such a difference!
My niece recently had this same experience at her high school. However, the teacher was not receptive of her and she ended up walking out of the room. The teacher says the R word is the correct word to use and he will continue to use it. My niece still refuses to use that word and continues to make her stand against the class using it. Maybe over time he will come to understand why it isn’t right.

I will share this with my niece and maybe it will give her strength to continue to fight that word!!
