We were pretty much ready to give up. Each and every agency we had applied to for assistance with Parker’s medical issues turned us down because, on PAPER, we simply weren’t poor enough. It didn’t matter that after you subtracted what we were paying out of pocket each month for Parker put us UNDER the poverty level, rules were rules and well, you know the rest.
We went through DSPD in hopes of securing Medicaid and WIC for Parker. 2.5 years and we have yet to hear a word back. I am pretty sure that we are the first people to be turned down by Shriners as they don’t see Parker’s hypotonia as being an ORTHO issue. The private grants we applied for also came back with polite notes letting us know that for whatever reason, another family had been chosen.
A few days after I had sworn off filling out more grant forms, my friend Jan emailed me about United Children’s Health Care. She had read through the qualifications and felt we just might make the cut. I filled out papers. Got a letter from Parker’s Pedi stating that Parker did indeed deal with all of the issues we said he did. We faxed in a copy of our latest tax return to prove our financial claims.
And then we waited.
Friday there arrived on our front porch a small box. Inside the box was a small stuffed bear for Parker, and notice that we had been awarded the maximum grant amount to go towards private speech therapy and Pediasure for Parker for ONE FULL YEAR.
Let me tell you a little something about this grant. It comes from an INSURANCE COMPANY. Yup. An insurance company. You HAVE TO HAVE INSURANCE coverage in order to even apply for this grant. This company GETS IT. They understand and recognize the huge gap that middle class families are falling through when trying to provide for their child with special needs.
I can’t begin to tell you what this grant means to our family. I’m not talking about just the financial side. While this grant coupled with a successful Praying for Parker Concert will make an overwhelming difference in our ability to provide Parker with the indepth care he needs, it isn’t just about financial issues.
What I can’t begin to tell you is how incredible it feels to know that a group of people got together, reviewed Parker’s case, and saw in Parker the same potential that WE see in him. They believe in Parker’s potential and awarded some of their precious resources to help him become the best Parker he can possibly become.
Each and every time someone donates to Parker’s medical fund we feel the same exact way. We feel so incredibly blessed that there are others out there willing to give of their resources because they share in our hopes and dreams for Parker.
We are sincerely grateful for all of you who are able to see the very big potential in a very little guy. `

I am happy dancing for you guys! (And the people in the hotel room below us want to know what all the hoopla is.) Hang on Tammy, you know God will continue to provide. We had so many “ifs” and “don’t know hows” in the last few days with regard to an upcoming move, house hunting, etc…God is putting it all in place.
When I get home there is something I want to ask you about along the lines of a simple fund raiser. I’ll email you about it later this week.
Now, how ’bout a Parky fix?
Tammy I am so glad that you got that grant! That is just wonderful. Hugs!!!
I am so glad you were granted this to help offset some of your costs. I cannot imagine having to go through this, you are a strong person!
As for Shriner’s…my uncle is the Chief of Staff in Philadelphia, say the word, email me and I will get you whatever you need!
Hugs to Parker!
YAY!
Hooray for you!!! In a way I know how you feel, I have to work less and do a little accounting magic to qualify Sydney for Indiana state insurance as secondary. Hope this is a run of “good” fortune to continue!!
Oh Tammy, this is just the lift in spirits you needed. I’m so, so glad. Your last post just left me speechless. This is soooo encouraging. Hooray!
OH PRAISE JESUS! I am so thankful for this lift in your spirits and your answer to prayer. Praise the Lord!
Just another official blog WooHoo!!
Hooray! Doing the happy dance out here!
I am so happy you had good news. Thank you for the comment and support, it means more than you know.
That is just great!!!
We fall into the same crack, but there is a program called tefra here that is specifically for families that do not qualify for services based on income. It is based on the child’s income rather than the parents. It basically covers the gap between private insurance and co pays. It paid the thousands of dollars to do Izzy’s dental work. (I think our private insurance had a max of 1300 yearly).
You might check to see if they have this in your state. I know that most states either have it or are getting it.
It’s amazing how good it feels when things work out int he right way! I’m so happy for you!
Hey Tammy…
A couple of blogger girls started good mail to promote sending out good mail to each other. To participate you email your address to them and then you can go onto a private blog to view all the people on the good mail list and then you mail away however and whatever you choose. It’s really been fun getting and sending good mail!
Congratulations!
As a mother, yours and Parker’s story has touched me deeply.
As an employee of United for the past 11 years, I am very proud of the work this organization does for situations such as yours.
My thoughts and prayers are with you.
