Sleep and the kid with special needs.

Where’s the Sandman when you really need him?

Don’t let this peaceful little face fool you. He woke up this morning at 4:00 a.m…. a total wild man.

After only 6 hours of sleep, Parker’s eyeballs popped open and all hell broke loose.

This humidifier used to have a bag of inhalation water attached to it. At about 4:10 a.m. Parker yanked that sucker off and proceeded to soak his bed and the floor with it.

(Yeah, I think I’ll get down there and do some serious cleaning when I replace that humidifier and inhalation bag..  blech.)

At 4:15 a.m. we were changing sheets and pajamas.

After being awake a few hours, my littlest Hodson boy crashes again. So asleep that you couldn’t wake him up if you had to.

And that’s not all. Parker has become a very restless even when he sleeps.. Several times during his the night, he’ll sit up, look around, tug on his vent, and then fall back asleep.

I thought at first this was the result of changing Parker’s Viagra to Cialys. But when I called Cardio he knew of no sleep issues associated with this medication.

Sleep is so important to a child’s development and ability to learn. Not to mention how essential to this Mama’s sanity. It looks as though we’ll need to schedule a new sleep study. This time I’m going with our new Pulmo rather than through PCMC.

Does your child have sleep issues? What have you done to address them?

Jack takes clonidine, risperdal and Prozac to keep him asleep—and he STILL wakes up every 4 hours doing the same thing–tug on tubes, talk, look around, go back to sleep…

I totally know the wild man syndrome too. I have woken to someone swimming in tube feed one too many times!

    Sending love!

I am currently laughing. Ty was up at 4:30. This happens frequently in our house. We turn on Mickey Mouse and the hubby and I switch being the parents. However, Tyler won’t crash until his bed time. We will have HOURS of tantrums but no way will he give up and nap. Ty has always had sleeping issues. As an infant he used melatonin, bendaryl and a myriad of other stuff. We finally broke out the big guns, got a sleep study and he is sedated every night. I mean he SHOULD be out for the whole night. 2 sleeping meds and a round of muscle relaxers. It doesn’t work. Obviously… so with a newborn and Tyler I long for 3 straight hours of sleep.

  3. Oh man, I think every special needs mom can get into this topic! Ever since Jax was born, I’ve heard a million excuses. It was his OSA and his airway. Then it was the seizures, and one doctor said brain injury kids just don’t sleep! Even after he was trached, he still didn’t sleep at night! At least before he was trached, he would just lay in bed and look at his mobile until he went back to sleep. He only woke me up if he wiggled enough to make his monitor go off, or pulled his oxygen out. I guess I could say I’m lucky that Jax can’t get out of bed, or grab his equipment and make a mess!
Now that he’s trached, if he wakes up, I have to get up. Even starting the vent didn’t help him sleep. I really do think its just special needs kids. We had another sleep study done, and it was beautiful with the trach and vent, yet he still gets up. He usually goes to sleep ok at first, if not, I’ll first try melatonin. Because when he wakes up at 4:00 (maybe its that specific time our kids like;) then I give him trazadone so he’ll go back to sleep until around 8!
I really wish we could figure out why our kids don’t sleep!! It would sure help us mommies out a ton!

My first suspicion was meds, too and I know you know which ones to suspect (bet you get some weirdo hits for using those two words). Do you ever question the other ingredients in the meds – starch, coloring, etc. ?

Christopher is another one. He is a 3rd shifter. Mama is not. I have spent the last 7 years sleeping in a recliner in his room. He also only sleeps 20 mins at a time. So about every half hour, I’m up unwinding him. Ugh!

  6. Tammy, I’m sleepy just reading this. :) My hats off to you for all you do for little Parker (who is adorable by the way)! I hope that the restless sleeping will soon pass so Parker, you and your whole family can get a good night’s sleep.

Sounds like you could really use an extended care nurse. My heart goes out to you and your family.
