Homeschooling and Down syndrome: Parker and the Letter E

Because I don’t count a letter as being mastered until Parker can identify it by sight, sound and sign, it takes us a little longer to make our way through the alphabet.  Especially when you add in surgeries and weeks worth of snot and low grade fevers.  sigh.

But we keep plugging along and today Parker met the letter E.

It’s so nice when you finally figure out a child’s particular learning style. It allows you to build lesson plans around their way of learning while changing it up and still making it fun.

Today I used plastic Easter eggs to introduce the letter E.

“Crack!” “Crack!” “Crack!” Parker cracked open his egg to discover……

His letter E made from felt! (I know. You can’t see it very well in this picture. But that is what was inside his eggs, an upper and lower case letter E.)

We discovered some words that begin with the letter E. Elephant and egg of course!

And because Parker is a tactile learner, he traced both the upper and lower case letter E several times. Then he traced them and put alphabet letter E stickers on them.

Simple, yet effective. That’s my kind of homeschooling session.

How have you used plastic Easter Eggs in your homeschooling lessons?

I really took your comment to heart. Please know that when I fight, I fight for the rights of all of our kids. They deserve the absolute best!

Love these ideas! Have you ever had him draw in salt or pudding? I had a couple kids who were also sensory learners & I’d have them write spelling words in a cookie sheet full of salt. I love following what you and Parker are doing. Thanks for the inspiration.
