How a Little Blue Wonder Saved My Life

Let’s be honest.  A parent of a medically fragile child with special needs has enough  to deal with without having to spend time cussing at, crying over, taking a sledge hammer to …uh….eternally trouble shooting their kids medical equipment.

Case In Point:

A certain Zevex Infinity Pump.

Continuous night feeds are a major part of our plan to get enough calories into our Brave Hero.  Alas, our pump spent more time screaming at us that there was

Uh. Really? You sure about that? Then what exactly is this stuff in the feeds bag?

Food!  There is too FOOD in this bag.

Oh, I knew all the tricks.

  • Open the cover, remove the tubing, tap it around to remove any invisible air bubbles, reattach.
  • Prime it for a few minutes by hand.
  • And then do it all over again 5 minutes later.

Over and over again we called our home health care company and told them this sucker was broken. They’d come out and tell us that they had had nothing but problems with this model of feeding pump and then leave us with another pump of the very same make and model.

Uh.  Hello?

After spending my bazillionth night wrestling with our FOURTH Infinity Pump, I finally called and demanded a pump that actually worked.

Because priming a pump by hand all night long sucks.

I must have had the sound of desperation in my voice, because this time the guy arrived bearing our salvation.

Helloooo, Gorgeous.

Did I mention that this beauty primes itself? Oh, yes it does.

It only took one night for me to fall in love with this little Blue Wonder.

What can I say? It’s the simple things in life that keep this Mama from running off the nearest cliff.

Woot! Woot!!!! We LOVE OUR JOEY!!!!! (I think I’m going for most exclaimation points. LOL!) Christopher used to have the same issues. We very rarely have alarms with the Joey anymore. YEAH!!!

The only drawback is that the battery on the Joey is only about 14 hours, and opposed to at least 24 for the Zevex. While not an issue most of the time, it CAN take us up to 11 hours one way to get to some appointments. His battery is dead before the day is out. :(

Thankfully, we don’t have to go there very often.

Sooooooo glad you got a pump that works now!!! Yeah!

  5. Oh Joey is our savior as well! The infinity lasted about a month at our house before I threw the sucker out the window. When it primed itself, you’d think I just won a million dollars. Yeah for Joey!!

  6. Isn’t it amazing how one little life saving piece of equipment can make you insane in like under 60 seconds?? We have the infinity pump…and let me tell you it has made me CRAZY at times….thankfully our company has been great at helping us right away if we ever have problems. We had this same thing happen not too long ago…ACCCCKKKK. Glad you could get a pump that will work for you.

We loved our Kangaroo Joey, loved it. Worked great even on the go in C’s backpack (it was a little heavy for him to carry but that was pretty much my only complaint). Loved how easy priming it was and setting it. Glad you have one you like.
If you need the backpack for it or any feed bags let me know, I’ll happily send them to you.

  8. We have the Zevex as well and have had the same issues. However, when they released their new bags the issues stopped. I have always liked the Zevex for its size and it pushes Makezie’s super thick blended food really well. When that little box doesn’t work right though, throwing it out the window while driving over a mountian pass is someting I dream about! I am so glad you got one that works better for you! Here’s to less sleepless night!

Wow does that catch my eye~I have two boys on Infinity pumps for night feedings. How quiet is it? Does a light stay like the infinity (which my kids don’t like)? What does the alarm sound like compared to the Infinity? How much bulkier/heavier do you think it is compared to the Infinity?

i too have the “no food” thang when I add some extra water at the end..it seems to read the thinned downed formula different..I might be crazy on that, but I have tried everything and only adding another can of formula will stop the thang from “no food”ing me…

    • I was told our Blue Wonder would be loud…..but it’s not. There is a blue ‘glow’ at the top all night long. It’s fatter than the Infinity…….but seriously no big deal. We are still THRILLED with this machine.
