Saturday was kind of a red-letter day for us. We decided that Parker was healthy enough to begin his Physical Therapy sessions again. Parker has PT twice a month, OT twice a month, and works with our Provider twice a month. Where we live Kids On The Move supplies these services as a way for the parent to learn how to do the necessary therapies with their child. Then the parent becomes the Specialist, providing the outlined therapies the child needs. Many families choose to add private therapies paid for by their insurance companies, but our insurance company won’t touch a dime of any of this kind of service. Like that was a big newsflash. So I spend a lot of time researching ways and techniques to help Parker with his gross motor skills. 

Right off the PT asks how much Parker now weighs. 14 pounds and FOUR ounces I reply with a big grin. We are very proud of those four ounces. Oh, the PT replies. Her little boy, who is only 3 months old, already weighs 15 pounds.

And with that we get into the day’s workout. Right now we are concentrating on crawling. Or more correctly, pre-crawling. Parker can do his take on the Comando Crawl, but not the up on all fours kind of crawl. And getting to that point takes work. Work that I am doing the vast majority of. Parker tends to roll up into a little ball each and every time he is coached into pushing down through his arms in the typical ‘four point’ position that one needs to be in to really crawl. What he does tend to put a lot of work into is letting me know how much he resents being made to work. For a little guy born with really beat up lungs, he can work up a pretty good yell. Repeatedly. 

So that was the quest. The trick is to make Parker think he isn’t working……..but that he is playing. This kid has the work thing all figured out. And he continues to opt out of it. So the PT and I were brainstorming and thinking of what Parker likes to do. Well, Parker loves any kind of motion and bouncing. So the PT had me get a towel and we used that as a type of a harness under Parker’s stomach. Eureka! The towel gave Parker enough stability to make him feel safe enough to get up on his hands and knees without the fear of turfing it face first. I could also use the towel to lift Parker up, thus giving him the sensation of movement as a reward for his hard work. 

Okay, so perhaps our goal of entering Parker into the first Olympic Crawling Race isn’t going to come to pass anytime soon. But some days you are just grateful for any new idea to try simply because it gives you one more reason to keep your dream alive.
